CHICHEN ITZA

Chichen Itza is a pre-Columbian archaeological site built by the Maya civilization in the northern centre of the Yucatán Peninsula, between Valladolid and Merida. Its name means "At the mouth of the well of the Itza".

UNESCO World Heritage Site, Chichen Itza is the second-most visited archaeological site in Mexico, drawing many visitors from the popular tourist resort of Cancún. In 2007, Chichen Itza El Castillo (The Temple of Kukulcan) was named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World after a worldwide vote.

Over the past several years, public access to the monuments has been prohibited. While visitors can walk around them, they can no longer climb them or go inside their chambers. The most recent closure was El Castillo, which was closed after a woman from San Diego fell to her death in 2006.
